Haq and History at the Surrey Centre Library

March 29, 2022 – July 6, 2022

The Haq and History exhibit travels through BC, with new content added at each stop drawn from local research into the history of South Asian immigrants in the area. The exhibit grows as it moves through British Columbia and at the Surrey Centre Library, that local contribution came from a significant community exhibition:

Being Punjabi: Unfolding the Surrey Story was an exhibition at the Museum of Surrey (Oct. 2019 – Feb. 2020) that honoured members of Surrey's Punjabi community through personal stories. It traced Punjabi settlement in Canada from 1897 onward and reflected the experiences of Surrey's Punjabi population of more than 100,000 people (2020).

Featuring the voices of sixteen local Punjabis through multimedia and interactive elements, the exhibition explored stories of struggle, success, and belonging. As the first exhibition in Canada focused on Surrey's Punjabi community, it invited visitors to contribute their own stories.

With permission, the South Asian Studies Institute reused selected content for a 2021 exhibition at Surrey Centre Library (March 29 – July 6, 2022). The four panels shown here are drawn from that display.
