Haq and History at Royal BC Museum
August 19, 2019
Museums worldwide are undergoing significant changes to promote inclusivity and empower marginalized communities. The Royal BC Museum is actively engaging with these communities through projects like the Punjabi Canadian Legacy Project (PCLP), developed in partnership with the South Asian Studies Institute. Initiated in 2013, the PCLP aims to preserve and share Punjabi Canadian heritage from the community’s perspective. A pivotal event occurred in 2019 with the unveiling of the “Haq & History” exhibit, which showcased community stories and experiences. This exhibit highlighted key themes in Punjabi Canadian history and marked a significant step toward recognizing and celebrating underrepresented narratives. The project’s ongoing mission is to challenge traditional museum practices and ensure that community voices are prioritized in heritage work.
